LiveSeeding Hosts First ‘Pathway to Impact’ Workshop

Feb 3, 2025

On Wednesday, 29 January 2025, the LiveSeeding project held its first Pathway to Impact workshop, bringing together project partners to discuss the value of their work and strengthen the project’s long-term impact. The workshop provided an opportunity to exchange knowledge and collaborate on defining how LiveSeeding contributes to the organic seed sector.

Agenda & Key Discussions

The workshop began with project coordinator Mariano Iossa outlining the purpose and objectives of the session. Following this introduction, Ana-Marija Špcinagel, responsible for communication, dissemination, and business planning, presented the results of the partner survey, emphasizing the different ways in which partners contribute to the project’s overall impact. This was followed by a group discussion led by Monika Messmer, the project’s scientific coordinator, where partners worked together to analyze the scientific, societal, and economic impact of LIVESEEDING. Divided into working groups, participants explored how their activities within the project translate into real-world impact. The workshop concluded with each group sharing their insights, after which Monika Messmer provided a summary of key takeaways and next steps to ensure that LiveSeeding continues to maximize its impact.

Survey Results Highlight Progress in Crop Diversity and Organic Seed Initiatives

Before the workshop, we conducted a survey among our partners, which revealed several key impacts of the LiveSeeding project. These impacts include:

1. Increasing crop diversity.

2. Encouraging conventional seed companies to invest in organic seed production and variety testing.

3. Contributing to the inclusion of three or more species on the non-derogation list.

4. Reducing the number of derogations for non-organic seed.

5. Establishing new organic breeding initiatives.

While these are some of the most significant impacts identified through our research with partners, the LiveSeeding project has many other important effects as well.

This workshop reinforced the commitment of LiveSeeding partners to strengthening the organic seed sector. By working together, they are making meaningful contributions to increasing crop diversity, improving organic breeding practices, and reducing reliance on derogations. Through collaboration and knowledge-sharing, LiveSeeding continues to build a solid foundation for a more sustainable and resilient organic seed system. Stay tuned for further updates on the project’s progress.
