The LiveSeeding project held it’s first ever Training in organic breeding

Jan 29, 2025

On Monday, the 27th January 2025, the LiveSeeding held it’s first online Training in organic breeding gathering more than 100 breeders, researchers, students and participants interested in the topic. The topic of the first Module within the first Training Package was “Plant Genetic Resources (PGRs): collection, conservation and exchange to support the increase of agrobiodiversity in farming systems“. The Module was divided into three units each of them focusing on an important part of the Plant Genetic Resources.

The Unit 1.1 was presented by professors from Universitat Politècnica de València Adrian Rodriguez-Burruezo, Ana M. Fita and Eva Solbes focusing on Public/Institutional seedbanks: PGRs collection, conservation and exchange. Their main focus was on Seedbank related topics such as seed management, exchanges, parameters, knowledge and providing participants with valuable materials about seedbanks. As a part of the Unit 1.1 participants had the opportunity to take a quiz on seedbanks and discuss the answers with Unit leaders to better understand the topic presented. The Unit 1.1 ended with participants asking many questions to learn more about this important topic.

After a short break, dr. Vladimir Meglič continued the training with Unit 1.2, presenting the topic Prebreeding: from genetic resources characterisation to their use in breeding programmes. The focus of his Unit was to teach participants on Pre-breeding as a highly multidisciplinary set of activites, the importance of germplasm resources for crop improvement and so much more. Participants had the opportunity to take a quiz written by dr. Meglič to further understand the topic and ask questions related to the Unit 1.2, enabling a better understanding of this unit.

The last presentation of the day, Unit 1.3 was on Community seed banks: colletions, dynamic management and exchange presented by Kostas Koutis from Aegilops, Riccardo Bocci from Rete Semi Rurali and Gabriele Maneo from Let’s Liberate Diversity. The main conclusions of the presentations were that community seed banks provide direct access to locally adapted varieties and farmers’ seeds, that CSBs, as an institution based on social-community management of agricultural biodiversity, can ensure the effective implementation of farmers’ rights, and so much more. They ended the session by answering many questions from the participants, helping them to further develop their understanding and knowledge of the topic.

The first module was a great success and a door opener for all the other trainings within the LiveSeeding project.
