LiveSeeding at the Let’s Liberate Diversity Forum and International Farmers’ Gathering Sow your Resistance

Oct 31, 2024

From October 3rd to 5th, Antibes hosted the latest edition of the Let’s Liberate Diversity (LLD) Forum, integrated into the International Gathering ‘Sow Your Resistance’. With 500 participants from across the globe, the event brought together farmers, researchers, policymakers, and advocates to discuss the critical role of cultivated diversity and its interactions with the key topic of human migration.

The forum was organized through a great collaborative effort by Réseau Semences Paysannes (RSP), European Coordination Let’s Liberate Diversity (ECLLD), SOL, and Réseau Semences Paysannes Maralpines (RSPM). This collaboration was instrumental in creating a space where different perspectives could come together, fostering rich exchanges on seed diversity and dynamic management of cultivated diversity.

Although the overarching theme of the event was on seed and migration, having so many key players together created a unique opportunity for the LiveSeeding project to disseminate its work and involve a wide community in topics such as seed law reform and seed quality.

Workshops and Capacity Building

This year’s forum featured a series of capacity-building workshops as part of the LiveSeeding project, focusing on key topics such as seed quality and seed law reform.

One of the highlights was the training on seed quality and health, part of Work Package 3. This session, titled ‘Seed Storage: Techniques and Principles for Preserving Seed Health,’ emphasized the importance of proper storage conditions to maintain seed vitality. Participants shared their own storage practices and learned about physiological processes that impact seed aging. Led by Stéphanie Klaedtke, Matthias Gudinchet, Mussa Fall, and Frank Adams, the training provided valuable insights into extending seed longevity and ensuring their viability for future generations.

Another key workshop was ‘All You Ever Wanted to Know on EU Seed Law Reform,’ part of Work Package 4, where participants delved into the complexities of EU seed marketing regulations and their impact on seed diversity. Led by experts including Magdalena Prieler and Judit Feheer, this session highlighted the challenges and opportunities brought by ongoing reforms, offering strategies for those working to preserve and enhance biodiversity in the face of regulatory changes.

Looking Forward

As in previous editions, the forum created an invaluable space for networking and collaboration, laying the groundwork for future projects and joint initiatives. A thorough report detailing the insights and outcomes from the workshops and discussions is expected in the coming months, offering an even deeper look into the discussions and insights emerged during the event.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to explore the long-term impact of this milestone event!
