In September, Budapest hosted the European Organic Congress 2024, a significant event for those involved in the organic movement. Organized by our partners, IFOAM Organics Europe and ÖMKi (Hungarian Research Institute of Organic Agriculture), the Congress gathered a diverse group of stakeholders, including policymakers, researchers, farmers, and industry representatives. Over two days, attendees participated in discussions on important topics impacting the organic sector, focusing on innovation, collaboration, and the role of organic agriculture in addressing global challenges.
LiveSeeding at the event
During the discussions on various topics, the LiveSeeding project highlighted its focus on organic plant breeding. In the breakout session titled “Organic Plant Breeding and Seed Production” Monika Messmer, the Scientific Coordinator from the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL), presented on the current status and potential future developments of organic plant breeding in Europe. Messmer noted the necessity for greater investment and collaboration to address the increasing demand for organic seed and mentioned LiveSeeding’s initiatives to develop and promote a variety of organic types.
The session included insights from a plant breeder affiliated with the Institute for Soil Sciences (HUN-REN ATK TAKI), who provided perspectives relevant to Hungary. A panel discussion with representatives from German Saatgut, the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture, the National Food Chain Safety Office, and ÖMKi addressed the steps necessary to phase out national derogations and enhance the adoption of organic seeds. The conversation focused on strategies to improve the availability and accessibility of organic seed, such as strengthening organic breeding programs, facilitating knowledge exchange, and addressing regulatory challenges.
