On 13 January 2026, LiveSeeding organised an EU webinar dedicated to the registration of Organic Varieties (OV) and the practical implementation of adapted DUS and organic VCU testing procedures.
The webinar brought together experts from research institutes, examination offices and breeding organisations across Europe to discuss regulatory developments, technical protocols and concrete national experiences related to the registration of Organic Varieties under the current EU framework.

From regulatory framework to practical implementation
The webinar addressed the regulatory and technical dimensions of registering Organic Varieties under the current EU framework. It clarified the relationship between Organic Plant Breeding (OPB), Organic Varieties (OV) and Organic Heterogeneous Material (OHM). Also, it examined how the EU Organic Regulation and its implementing acts shape access to the market for organically bred material.
Particular attention was given to the implementation of adjusted DUS (Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability) protocols during the temporary derogation period (2023–2030). Speakers discussed how uniformity requirements can be balanced with the need for greater genetic diversity in open-pollinated varieties. Also, how cooperation between breeders and examination offices can facilitate the registration process.
The second part of the webinar focused on organic VCU (Value for Cultivation and Use) testing. Experiences from Italy, France and Poland demonstrated how VCU trials conducted under organic conditions provide more relevant performance data for organic systems. Particularly regarding disease resistance, nutrient efficiency and stress tolerance. The discussion underlined that testing in organic environments is essential to ensure fair evaluation of Organic Varieties and to support their successful entry into the market.

Main recommendations
The webinar concluded with several key recommendations:
- Adapt DUS protocols for Organic Varieties while ensuring transparency and clarity in the registration process.
- Conduct VCU testing for Organic Varieties under organic conditions.
- Define Organic Plant Breeding clearly in EU PRM legislation and ensure consistency between regulatory frameworks.
- Maintain access to the market for Organic Heterogeneous Material and safeguard breeders’ and farmers’ rights.
The webinar forms part of LiveSeeding’s work to improve access to markets for Organic Varieties and to support the practical implementation of the EU Organic Regulation.
