Germany Charts a Path to 2036: Phasing Out Non-Organic Seed in Organic Farming

Jul 10, 2025

On 5 June 2025, FiBL Germany and Bioland Beratung GmbH hosted a webinar titled Developing Roadmaps to Improve the Supply of Organically Produced Seed and Planting Material until 2036 in Germany. The event brought together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to share first findings from an ambitious national effort to phase out the use of non-organic seed and planting reproductive material (PRM) in Germany’s organic sector.

They presented initial findings on the feasibility of phasing out non-organic seed and plant reproductive material (PRM) in German organic farming by 2036. The discussion covered early results of the national roadmap projects for arable crops, vegetables, and vegetative planting material (apple and vine), along with insights from a sister initiative focused on organic PRM for ornamental plants. The role of the supply chain in strengthening demand for organic seed was also highlighted as a critical factor for successful transition.

This national effort contributes to the EU-wide goal of reaching 100% organic seed use and shows the importance of coordination between breeders, farmers, retailers, and regulators.
